About us

Our Story

Big Cup was born in the serene hills of Coorg, the coffee hub of India. Four passionate planters of the Bota and Thaikappa families - Sheeban, Shamveel, Faizan, and Sadat, shared a dream of ensuring their estate coffee matches global benchmarks and is enjoyed by all across the country.

Thus in 2017, under the able guidance & mentorship of Mr.Nizam, a coffee veteran, Big Cup Café, the first specialty café was launched in Coorg. It rapidly established its presence and was appreciated by visitors from across the globe. This success propelled the founders to add an “Artisan Coffee Roaster” from Germany, thus ensuring complete control of the value chain from “Bean to Brew.” Following this expansion, their coffee reached the palettes of coffee lovers in Odisha in 2019; Bangalore in mid-2020, and most recently, in Mysuru in mid-2022.

Mission: Our mission is to provide the finest coffee, harvested from our estates and invite guests to a world-class, intimate coffee experience, where one can deepen their knowledge for this much-loved bean. We would love to “Inspire lives through a cup of freshly roasted coffee”.

Our coffee: Big Cup Cafe uses only the ripest and selectively-handpicked coffee cherries from the estates of Sandalkad, Sandalwood and Old Kent. The Bota family manages the Sandalkad & Sandalwood estates, while Old Kent is managed by the Thaikappa family.

The coffee is grown after careful assessment, choosing only the highest grade of Arabica and Robusta varieties.

The Coffee bushes are grown at an altitude of over 1000 masl under the two-tier Canopy of rainforest trees, making it bird-friendly and 100% shade-grown. The coffee cherries are closely monitored all the way until it's roasted in house and brewed to perfection.

Each process is special - the journey of coffee beans from harvesting, drying, curing & hulling until it's roasted, brewed and finally relished by our patrons. This very journey imparts - flavours, aromas and personality, uniquely expressed by the "Terroir", as manifested in the cup, bringing you the essence, history and vision of the Bota and the Thaikappa family. Our families have owned and managed coffee plantations for more than 150 years and Big Cup is the fusion of the expertise in farming and hospitality.

The story has only begun....

Ever wondered what is the significance of Big Cup?! It is nothing but the reflection of the big hearts and warm hospitality of the founders, who would like to pass on the baton of their family’s century-old legacy, their passion for coffee, and bring it to all corners of India and eventually the globe.

150 years of legacy

Thanks to the everlasting coffee experience that Big Cup promises, we have been conferred the prestigious "Traveller's Choice" Award from Trip Advisor.

All our coffee is grown under the two-tier Canopy of rainforest trees, a plantation practice that is considered bird-friendly and shade-grown, where numerous flora & fauna call home. This adds to the richness and complexity of the bean.

Our estates are also certified by Rainforest Alliance for sustainable coffee farming as well as being part of a community that shares responsibilities towards a healthy ecosystem.
